Our free typing speed test measures your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy percentage. The test is simple: choose your preferred time duration, click the typing area, and start typing the displayed text as quickly and accurately as you can. Each character you type is instantly evaluated and highlighted in real time. Correct characters appear in green, while incorrect characters are shown in red, giving you immediate visual feedback on your performance.
The test begins automatically when you press your first key, so there is no need to click a start button. A countdown timer shows your remaining time, and your WPM and accuracy are calculated live as you type. When the timer runs out, you receive a detailed breakdown of your results including total words per minute, accuracy percentage, correct characters, wrong characters, and total time elapsed.
Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), where one word is defined as five characters including spaces. The average typing speed for most adults is between 38 and 42 WPM. Professional typists typically reach 65 to 75 WPM, while advanced typists can exceed 100 WPM. Competitive speed typists often achieve speeds above 150 WPM. Your speed depends on many factors including familiarity with the keyboard layout, finger placement technique, practice frequency, and the complexity of the text being typed.
Accuracy is equally important as raw speed. A high WPM with low accuracy means you are making many errors, which in real-world tasks like writing emails, coding, or data entry, leads to time lost on corrections. Aim for at least 95% accuracy while gradually increasing your speed through regular practice sessions.
Place your fingers on the home row keys (ASDF for the left hand and JKL; for the right hand). This position allows you to reach all keys with minimal finger movement, which is the foundation of touch typing.
Consistency is more important than long sessions. Practice typing for 10 to 15 minutes every day rather than one long session per week. Regular practice builds muscle memory and helps your fingers learn common key combinations automatically.
Speed without accuracy is counterproductive. Start by typing slowly and correctly, then gradually increase your pace as your accuracy improves. It is much harder to unlearn bad habits than to build good ones from the start.
Train yourself to keep your eyes on the screen. Looking at the keyboard breaks your flow and slows you down significantly. Cover the keyboard with a cloth if needed to force yourself to type by touch alone.
A good typing speed depends on your needs. For general computer use, 40 to 50 WPM is considered adequate. For office work and data entry, 50 to 70 WPM is expected. Professional typists and programmers often type at 70 to 100 WPM or faster. Competitive typists can exceed 150 WPM. The most important thing is to maintain high accuracy while typing at a comfortable speed for your tasks.
Words per minute (WPM) is calculated by dividing the total number of correctly typed characters by 5 (since the standard word length is defined as 5 characters including spaces), and then dividing by the elapsed time in minutes. This standardized method ensures fair comparison regardless of the specific words in the test. For example, if you correctly type 250 characters in one minute, your WPM would be 50.
While this typing test is designed to work on all devices, it is best experienced on a desktop or laptop computer with a physical keyboard. Typing tests on mobile devices or tablets with on-screen keyboards do not accurately reflect your true typing speed because virtual keyboards have fundamentally different mechanics compared to physical keyboards. For the most accurate results, use a standard keyboard.
Your last 10 test results are automatically saved in your browser using local storage. You can view your recent results in the history section below the typing area, which shows your WPM and accuracy for each test along with a visual chart. This allows you to track your improvement over time without creating an account. Note that clearing your browser data will remove your saved history.
High speed with low accuracy is counterproductive in real-world scenarios. Every error requires time to detect and correct, often taking more time than typing carefully in the first place. In professional settings, errors in emails, documents, or code can have significant consequences. The most efficient typists maintain above 95% accuracy at their comfortable speed rather than pushing for maximum speed with frequent mistakes.
